Why Organisations have Diversity Training

26th July 2013

David Marshall CEO at Marshall Elearning the leading equality and diversity e-learning consultancy takes a step back from the technology to look at the reasons why organisations carry out equality and diversity training:

Diversity elearning is one of Marshall Elearning’s specialities. We build our equality and diversity training courses for the NHS, councils, law firms, investment banks, charities and most universities in the UK.

However, putting the technology to one side, whether we deploy in HTML5 or Flash, whether the client uses our learning management system or we implement on their own training database, I reflected on what motivates organisations to carry out diversity training and it’s usually one of three reasons:

  • The business case – how equality and diversity help the organisation to operate more effectively
  • The moral argument that says it is the right thing to treat people fairly and equally.
  • The legal bottom-line ie the need to stay within the law. The organisation does not want to pay the financial costs of a discrimination case or attract negative publicity.

To my mind, the moral argument and the legal bottom line are well documented.

What about the business case for diversity?

Equality is the key to creating an inclusive and effective organisation:

  • Having a workplace environment where staff are treated fairly and feel comfortable equals motivated and hard working staff, who are more likely to stay
  • Being open-minded about who is recruited gives the organisation a wider choice and can employ the most talented people
  • Staff from a wide range of backgrounds and with diverse experiences are innovative and creative
  • A workforce broadly reflecting the local community is more sensitive to the needs of local customers and service users
  • Services in tune with the needs of different groups in the community are better services resulting in higher levels of satisfaction with the organisation’??s performance.
  • Organisations visibly committed to equality and diversity help to increase customer or service user confidence in the fairness of the organisation’??s processes
  • Ultimately, organisations can become role models for other local organisations on the equality and diversity agenda.
