Marshall ACM at SDF Conference

25th November 2013

Earlier this month Marshall ACM were proud sponsors of the drinks reception at the SDF conference, “Developing Leadership for the Future Coaching as a Catalyst for Success” held on 14 and 15 November 2013 at the Hilton Hotel in Nottingham.

The Staff Development Forum (SDF) is a not-for-profit charitable organisation, representing and working with staff and organisational developers in Higher Education. They aim to enhance the efficiency, effectiveness and organisational performance of the Higher Education sector and its workforce, also enhancing the professional and career development of members.

A sharing experience

David Marshall, Marshall ACM CEO, was delighted to share his experience with delegates, at two talks on Friday morning 15 November. He co-hosted with Nick Gallagher-Hughes, Head of Staff Development at Harper Adams University (currently in interim role at University of Wolverhampton) on their New Technology for Managers session.

Wolverhampton and Harper Adams are collaborative clients of Marshall ACM so it was great to work so closely again with Nick on this initiative.

The conference saw keynote speakers talking on the importance of coaching and leadership. David and Nick s talk demonstrated to delegates how to use technology to do this.

It centred on Marshall’s expertise of utilising technology to enhance learning and development to support the management of organisations, showing delegates a new wave of learning and support, and demonstrating the new Managers Toolkit App.

The Managers Toolkit App

Our new Managers Toolkit app is not an e-learning course per se, rather a performance support, which shares David’s expertise of supporting managers with access to learning and development – the app allows learners to quickly familiarise themselves with:

  • A definition of management
  • Key skills and tasks expected of managers
  • Clear positive behaviours for manager, and negatives behaviours to avoid or work on.

But just as Marshall ACM e-learning includes quizzes for learners, so too does the app, supporting deeper engagement and an element of fun too.

The idea of the Manager’s Toolkit App came about after a successful approach used by The Bank of England. We designed their Diversity elearning in a Native App format (an app designed for specific platforms eg iPad or iPhone) too, incorporating elements of gamification, which was really well received by other clients we demonstrated it to. The app joins our family of Management e-learning courses.

Some of our clients fed back that it was particularly useful for workshops, as it enabled a blend of learning, social learning and interaction, enhancing the learning experience.

David Marshall said: “We were delighted to again sponsor the SDF Conference this year and enjoyed taking part. This year we created an app just for the purpose of the conference – making the point that we think native app technology is underused in higher education.

Anyone attending the conference was able to request a free link to our management training app and we look forward to receiving feedback on how we can tailor the app further for the HE sector. I was very happy with the interest shown by delegates at the conference.”
