18 Years Delivering Diversity Training

28th August 2020

This month marks Marshall E-Learning’s 18th Anniversary in business! A milestone we are incredibly proud of, and particularly significant given the global impact of the COVID-19 pandemic this year. Since 2002, Marshalls has built on its core business framework – creating accessible, web-based diversity training courses.

Our first course, Diversity in the Workplace, and variations of it, has kept Marshalls busy ever since. Eighteen years later, we have trained over two million people in the UK, Republic of Ireland, Germany, Holland, United States, Canada, Australia, Japan, Vietnam, China, Thailand, Spain and France.

Founder David Marshall reflects on 18 years in business and what that means to Marshall E-Learning going forward:

‘I’m really pleased to say Marshall E-Learning is 18 years old, our birthday being 19th August. It seems a perfect day to announce we have just been commissioned by our first US university. We are all excited to be designing diversity and inclusion e-learning courses for Southern Methodist University, in Dallas, Texas. It’s been fantastic working with Dr Maria Dixon there and it feels like very meaningful work. I do hope I might be able to visit sometime.

I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank my dedicated team and our loyal clients. Our key partners too, including Barnardo’s for whom we created a successful social enterprise venture on safeguarding e-learning and the Employers Network for Equality and Inclusion whose unconscious bias course we designed has been so popular.

When I first started writing a diversity e-learning course back in 2002, I had no idea it would keep me busy into my forties. I look back now with over one million people trained by Marshall E-Learning and our work being translated into Thai, Vietnamese and many other languages, and feel so pleased that a fledging business idea worked out for me, but also for my colleagues and clients.

You can be an introvert and start a business, it just takes a bit of bravery when you start giving your first few presentations. I never had to change or become slick and polished. We have always tried hard to over deliver and not be too transactional with clients. It is therefore so rewarding that so many clients have been with us for longer than ten years now. I’m delighted to welcome Southern Methodist University to our community of clients alongside all our new clients from Ireland with every university in the Republic of Ireland recently choosing Marshalls for their diversity and inclusion e-learning.

The only real change to our business now is perhaps we cannot hold our user groups in London anymore, but we, like many businesses, are utilising the likes of Zoom to meet virtually and keep connected. The world may have changed, but the future looks exciting for Marshalls.’

Based in Bankside, London SE1, Marshall E-Learning has a team of developers, illustrators, graphic designers and writers all supporting the core team which founded the firm back in 2002. During lockdown, we responded to the huge changes faced by our clients and released a number of resources to help them support staff working remotely and also as they return to their workplaces.
