How Unconscious Bias affects decision making
This video is the fourth in a series of 4 videos about Unconscious BiasĀ and how it impacts on our daily working lives. In this video we explore how Unconscious Bias affects decision making and how we can make better decisions.
It introduces the concept of System 1 and System 2 and how it affects decision making. And how, when snap judgments are required, the System 1 way of thinking kicks in, especially when you are under stress, in danger or multi-tasking which allows you to make decisions quickly to manage the situation. However these decisions are not always accurate or well thought out.
Our feelings about people are often influenced by instinctive feelings and can be based on obvious visual clues like age, weight, physical attractiveness, skin colour, disability or gender and other less visual characteristics such as accent, social background, sexual orientation, nationality, religion, education and even job title or department.
When we’re aware of this process we can correct our assumptions and make better decisions.
