COURSE OVERVIEW

Unconscious Bias Elearning Course - North American version, we explore what unconscious bias is, and look at forms of unconscious bias that may be present in the University setting.

Learners will be shown strategies for overcoming their unconscious bias and ways to improve decision making and relationship building. A heightened awareness of unconscious bias at university helps us to create more open, inclusive and effective campuses. After taking this training learners can expect to:

  • Build awareness of bias and unconscious bias
  • Demonstrate how your biases could impact on your feelings and feedback
  • Biases are formed from our upbringing, experience, socialization and the media.
  • Social categories lead us to prejudge, stereotype, or make assumptions with very little evidence.
  • Identify how to minimize the impact of any biases you have.

Unconscious bias continues to be a prevalent issue at University (and society as a whole), as portrayed by research cited in the Times Educational Supplement, that indicates that students are less likely to rate courses positively if they are taught by black or ethnic minority academics. Most of us unconsciously categorize people into groups as a means of saving processing time, but this, in turn, leads to negative stereotypes.

This Unconscious Bias Elearning Course works to educate students and make them aware of their stereotypes and biases so that they can work to reduce these with the aim of creating a more inclusive campus.

What You Say

"The video scenario’s developed by Marshall are very well done and provide very interesting spaces for reflection on understanding how subtle biases can emerge into a professional environment. The videos have been very helpful for unconscious bias training."
